February 7, 2014

I played hooky from school today to attend one day of the Colorado Council International Reading Association (CCIRA ) conference. This is a very large conference attended by hundreds of teachers, librarians, and other school professionals from around the state to learn more about literacy. Many nationally known authors attend as well.

My day started with a session presented by the author, Sharon Draper. She began her career as a teacher but is well known for her popular books. One of her recent books, Out of My Mind, is one of my favorite books of all time. Every 4th grader through adult should read it!

Other highlights included a luncheon with Henry Winkler (the Fonz turned writer), meeting astronaut, Alvin Drew, who helped build the space station and enjoying fellow librarian Mike McQueen present a session on getting boys to read. Oh..and there was shopping involved too! Needless to say, I had a very fun and full day!
